A West Philadelphia native, Joshua Wingate followed in the footsteps of his grandmother and mother when he enrolled at Temple after two years at the Community College of Philadelphia. Now a senior psychology major in the College of Liberal Arts, he has taken on several leadership roles at Temple, serving as an office assistant in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL); an Owl team leader during Orientation; and a resident assistant at Johnson and Hardwick Halls.
When transferring from the Community College of Philadelphia, what made you choose Temple?
I knew I wanted to go to Temple because it’s a family tradition. My grandmother attended Temple’s nursing school in the ’60s and my mom went here for graduate school. I was also impressed by what the psychology program offers, from its classes to its internships and career opportunities.
When I visited Main Campus, I was drawn to the architecture of the academic buildings and outdoor spaces from Founder’s Garden to Beury Beach. Overall, I really liked how connected everything felt and how easy it was to get around. Being close to home was a plus, and the financial aid I received made Temple an even better fit.
How did you go about finding community and making friends?
It was a challenge at first being a transfer student, so I tried to go to as many events on Main Campus as I could during Weeks of Welcome, including TU Palooza, transfer Orientation and the new student Convocation. I met my first batch of friends there, who I am still friends with now. Another benefit of going to campus events is that I made connections that led to campus jobs. My current position as an office assistant at IDEAL came from going to IDEAL’s cookout event. I was also first introduced to openings for my roles as an Owl team leader and a resident assistant by attending campus events.
What has been the best part of transferring to Temple (so far)?
I love how welcoming everyone is and how much school spirit there is. There is something here for everybody, no matter who you are and what you are interested in. I especially love that Temple is a big college campus with a city vibe. And with downtown just a short subway ride away, it’s easy to get out and explore everything Philly has to offer.
What does being a Temple student mean to you?
It is about Temple pride, working hard and persevering through any challenges that come my way as I pursue my degree. Also, it means getting involved and building as many connections as possible during my time here because there are so many amazing people and opportunities, so why not take advantage of it?
Do you have any advice for current or future transfer students?
I recommend looking for resources if you need help because there are so many that can help you succeed as a student. I learned not to compare myself to others because everyone’s journey is different. Also, I would suggest not being afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try new things because you never know who you will meet, who is watching you and what it may lead to.
