Herman Hurwitz, CST 57, MED 62, and his wife Sandra have committed a gift of $1.2 million to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine. The Hurwitz Family (Herman S. Hurwitz, MED 62; Sandra Hurwitz; Scott Michael Hurwitz; and David Philip Hurwitz, MED 91) Scholarship Fund will support medical school students with financial need.

We are incredibly grateful for the Hurwitz family s generosity, said John M. Daly, MED 73, dean and Harry C. Donahoo Professor of Surgery at the Katz School of Medicine. Their gift will make a profound difference to our students in helping them pursue their dreams of a medical school education.

My education, mentoring and experiences at Temple University and Temple University School of Medicine allowed me to grow in my profession and to help many people through the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine, said Herman Hurwitz. It also allowed me to meet my wonderful life partner, Sandi. Sandi and I felt that it was time to give back.

Hailing from Chester, Pennsylvania, Hurwitz followed a pathology residency at Temple University Hospital, completed in 1967, with service in the U.S. Navy.

After working for Kennedy Health System in New Jersey, he became medical director of Damon Clinical Laboratories in Trevose, New Jersey, and then senior medical director of Quest Diagnostics when Damon was purchased by the testing giant. At Quest, Hurwitz employed the Six Sigma management doctrine to reduce errors and improve lab efficiency, and became a sought-after authority on health statistics.

Raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Sandra Hurwitz met her husband while pursuing graduate studies at Temple.

For the Hurwitz family, a Temple degree is almost a tradition. The couple s son David, MED 91, is currently a hospitalist in Florida, while Herman s sister, Zelda Lederman, MED 57, is a retired psychiatrist in Moorestown, New Jersey.
