You’re already running late for class when you realize you forgot to charge your e-bike, and the battery is dropping fast. It’s tempting to crank up the speed and get there before it dies, but rushing can turn a quick ride into a dangerous one.

E-bikes are becoming an increasingly popular way to get around campus and the city. Whether you’re heading to class, work or home, a few simple safety habits can reduce your risk of a crash and protect your ride.  Slow down around pedestrians. E-bikes can reach speeds that make crashes more serious. Reduce your speed and give pedestrians plenty of space, especially on shared paths and walkways.

Don’t let being late lead to unsafe riding. Whether you’re rushing to class, work or home, slow down and make safer decisions.

Stay aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes up, stay alert and avoid distractions while riding. Put your phone away and pay attention to pedestrians, vehicles, other cyclists and your surroundings.

Follow the rules of the road. Ride in designated bike lanes when available, obey traffic signals and stop signs, and use extra caution at intersections and when crossing streets.

Make yourself visible. Make sure drivers and pedestrians can see you, especially at night. If you’re riding after dark, use front and rear lights and consider wearing reflective clothing or accessories. Avoid dark or poorly lit routes when there is a safer, better-lit option.

Register your e-bike with Temple Public Safety. Registration can make it easier to identify your bike if it’s lost or stolen. Haven’t picked up a lock yet? Temple Public Safety also offers free U-locks. A quality lock can be one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your e-bike when you’re not riding it.

Lock your bike every time. Even if you’re only stepping away for a few minutes, take the time to secure your e-bike. Lock the frame to a secure, fixed object and avoid leaving your bike unattended in isolated areas.

Consider adding a GPS tracker. A tracker can provide another layer of protection and may help locate your e-bike if it’s stolen. Keep in mind that a tracker is not a substitute for a good lock or other security measures.

Trust your instincts. If someone unexpectedly tries to stop or approach you while you’re riding, create distance and keep moving if it is safe to do so. Head toward a well-lit, populated area and don’t be afraid to change your route if something doesn’t feel right.

Your safety is more important than your e-bike or belongings. Do not physically resist or put yourself in danger. If someone demands your bike or property, give it to them and get to a safe location.

Once you’re safe, call Temple Police at 215-204-1234 or call 911.

If your e-bike is stolen, provide police with as much information as possible, including the bike’s make, model, color, serial number and any identifying features. If you have registered the bike or have GPS-tracking information, have that information available for investigators.

You have other options to get around, too. Temple offers Flight shuttles and free Uber vouchers that can help you get where you need to go safely.

A little planning before you ride can go a long way. Know your transportation options so you can get around campus and Philadelphia safer.
