In advance of the Thanksgiving holiday, Temple’s Department of Public Safety is giving back by distributing dozens of turkeys directly to its North Philadelphia neighbors.
As many North Philadelphia families are still feeling the strain of rising costs, Temple University’s Department of Public Safety (TUDPS) is stepping up to help with its 14th annual Thanksgiving dinner giveaway to support the North Philadelphia community.
On Monday, Nov. 24, the department formed an assembly line and packed 50 boxes full of turkey, plus all the fixings necessary to complete any Thanksgiving meal, before then distributing the meals to North Philadelphia neighbors and community groups.
“Holding Operation: Gobble Gobble ahead of Thanksgiving has become a tradition here Temple Public Safety,” said Jennifer Griffin, chief of police and vice president for public safety. “The boxes include everything: turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, greens and more so families can have a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.”
Kay Thompson, a longtime North Philadelphia neighbor, is among those who received a Thanksgiving meal.
“Temple University does so much for myself and my neighbors, and we all really appreciate them and Temple Police,” she said. “This ensures that my home will have a great Thanksgiving.”
The dinners were packaged together at the Temple Newman Center, 2129 N. Broad St.
“This Thanksgiving meal giveaway reminds us of the importance of community. Community is at the heart of Temple Police,” said Arashdeep Bawa, a Temple police officer.
“It also shows our gratitude towards our North Philadelphia neighbors,” added Kevin Santana, a Temple police officer.
Temple Police Officer Leroy Wimberly said seeing the smiles on the faces of those who receive the boxes is heartwarming.
“Its not only a great feeling for those who are receiving the boxes, but it’s a great feeling for us as well,” Wimberly said.
The Thanksgiving outreach project is just one the many community outreach initiatives spearheaded by Temple Public Safety.
The department’s next community outreach event will be its 28th annual Children’s Holiday Party, which will be held Sunday, Dec. 7. The event connects community neighbors with the campus community in the spirit of holiday season. Staff and students donate their time and talents to provide food, prizes, presents, decorations and entertainment for more than 300 children and their families.
