TFM alumnus James Ijames receives 2022 Pulitzer Prize for drama


James Ijames, who graduated from the School of Theater, Film and Media Arts with an MFA in acting in 2005, has won a 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for his off-broadway play Fat Ham.

Ijames has described his play Fat Ham as “a witty take on Hamlet where the only death is the patriarchy.”

James Ijames, TFM 05, has received a 2022 Pulitzer Prize in the category of drama for Fat Ham, his adaptation of Shakespeare s Hamlet set at a family barbecue in the South. Originally a filmed production released by the Wilma Theater on Broad Street in Philadelphia, Fat Ham is now running Off-Broadway at the Public Theater through June 12. Ijames previous awards include the 2015 Terrance McNally New Play Award, the 2017 Whiting Award, a 2019 Kesselring Prize, a 2020 Steinberg Prize, four Barrymore Awards and a 2015 Pew playwriting fellowship.
