Join us as collagist and author Theodore Harris performs a recited lecture of Our Flesh of Flames, his celebrated collaboration with poet Amiri Baraka.

Born in New York and raised in Philadelphia, Theodore co-founded the Anti-Graffiti Network with Mural Arts in 1985. Thedore is now among the most active voices and educators in Philly’s new Black Aesthetics movement.

As David Grundy remarks, “Harris’s institutional symbols metonymically stand in for the promises they fail to fulfil. His use of metonymy forces attention to the ways that meaning is created and weaponized. The images literally turn things upside down: the Capitol Building, which, in its inverted form, reminded Baraka of a bomb, Mount Rushmore or the Pentagon as a “wounded guillotine” (“On Our Flesh of Flames”).

This performance-lecture will be moderated by Dr. Reynaldo Anderson (Africology and African American Studies, College of Liberal Arts).
