Andrew Preston is the W.L. Lyons Brown Jr. Jefferson Scholars Foundation Distinguished Professor of Diplomacy and Statecraft at the University of Virginia. Before moving to UVA in 2025, he taught for 20 years at Cambridge University, and he is a past president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR). He has published 12 books, most recently Total Defense: The New Deal and the Invention of National Security, which was one of The New Yorker’s best books of the year.
