Dr. Mónica Ricketts (Associate Professor of History, College of Liberal Arts), will present on Intermixing in the Conquest. 

This talk will discuss the role marriage played during the conquest of Peru and will analyze the case of Beatriz Coya. Coya, an Inca royal heiress to one of the wealthiest and most powerful families of the Inca elite in Cusco, was forced to marry twice, once as a child and then as a teenager. The conversation draws on historian Jeremy Mumford's research,  which has studied the case great detail and provides rich evidence to discuss how women and marriage were essential to assure dominance in the 16th Century Andes.
