Hispanic Heritage Month Series

Romina Broglia's presentation, El Muro de la Vergüenza - The Wall of Shame, begins with a wound: the Muro de la Vergüenza a wall in San Juan de Miraflores that carves Lima into two places, one gated and prosperous, the other informal and improvised, climbing the desert hillsides in defiance of it. Rather than tearing the wall down, this project listens to it, treating it as a spine to be reawakened through small acts of care.

Clinics, classrooms, textile markets, and fog catchers that pull water from the desert air are woven into its length, turning a monument to division into a corridor of everyday life. Above it, an aerial tram rises and glides over the wall entirely, tracing a new path through the sky to connect the informal settlers, who have no roads of their own, to the city center where their labor already belongs. What was once a line of exclusion becomes, gradually, a thread of return.
