John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge Birding Trip

People hiking on a wooded trail

Join the Temple Office of Sustainability and the Temple Ecological Club for a day of birding at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge!

Celebrated as America's First Urban Refuge, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1972. The refuge is a treasured green space nestled within the city of Philadelphia, teeming with a rich diversity of fish, wildlife, and plants native to the Delaware Estuary. The refuge supports a diversity of habitats, including freshwater tidal marsh, open waters, mudflats, and woodlands that the hundreds of species call home.

On this excursion, we'll be leaving on a bus from the Howard Gittis Student Center at 9 AM with plans to arrive at the JHNWR by 10 AM. Here, we'll spend the morning helping with Bird Safe Philly helping install Feather Friendly dots on the Visitor Center. Then, we'll spend the afternoon hiking and birding around the refuge. We'll plan to be back on Temple's campus no later than 4 PM.

Be sure to pack a lunch, bring a water bottle, and wear comfortable clothing on this trip!
