Temple Film Professor Michael Dennis (Mike D.) is a filmmaker, curator, and lifelong advocate for Black independent cinema. He is also founder of Reelblack, an organization that creates, showcases, and champions African-American film. His Reelblack Renaissance label is dedicated to restoring and re-releasing hidden gems from the 1970s-90s.
Riverbend is a project of restoration that Professor Dennis has been working on for several years. The independent action drama revolves around three Black Vietnam soldiers who help a small town organize against a racist sheriff in the Deep South circa 1966. The screening at Temple will feature director Sam Firstenberg (Breakin’ II, American Ninja I & II) along with co-stars Julius Tennon, Alex Morris, and Vanessa Tate for a special event which includes a conversation, moderated by Temple Professor Kartik Nair, focused on the film’s making, its disappearance, and its recovery and 6K restoration.
