Stung by Mugdobble: Interpreting Disposable Text for Syndromic Surveillance

Epidemiology and Biostatistics
EpiBio

What is syndromic surveillance and what can be done with it? Dr. Andrew Walsh and Kevin Hutchison of Health Monitoring Systems will discuss how syndromic surveillance uses opportunistically gathered prediagnostic data to detect population-level health anomalies, monitor mass gatherings, and identify trends for novel diseases. Because the data is prediagnostic, it is disposable: error-prone, uncorrected, and only as detailed as the next step requires. To be usable, it has to be interpreted, not just parsed, recognized and filed.

Health Monitoring Systems works with over 500 hospitals across the country to provide syndromic surveillance and other services to state and local health departments.
