May 2026 Budget Update

Posted

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach the end of this fiscal year, I want to provide an update on the university’s fiscal year 2027 budget process.

I recognize that members of our community are concerned and anxious as we work through our budget challenges. Like many other universities, the financial reality Temple faces requires us to make difficult but necessary changes. As we move through this process, I am committed to providing regular updates as we work to finalize our budget for the next fiscal year.

Since my update last month, each school, college and major administrative unit received a budget reduction target for fiscal year 2027, and deans and vice presidents were asked to submit their budget reduction plans by May 15. We are currently reviewing each plan, and budget conferences will be held with each dean and vice president between May 26 and June 11 to discuss and finalize the plans for next year.

As we have shared, the coming fiscal year will begin our transition to a “One Temple” budget model. In early June, the Budget Model Task Force, which has been working closely with NACUBO this year, will submit its final recommendations on the new budget model. This is not simply a technical change, but a change in strategy intended to create a stronger and more sustainable institutional operating model.

I know this moment is challenging, but I am confident that we will emerge as a stronger institution, both academically and financially. It is imperative that we work together to position Temple on a sustainable long-term path. The needs of our students will always be at the center of our decision-making.

I will continue to provide updates in the coming weeks. Thank you all for your continued dedication to Temple and for all you are doing to support our students and one another during this period of difficult change.

Sincerely,

John Fry
President
