Dear Colleagues,
After serving as dean of Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine for 28 years, John A. Mattiacci has decided to retire, effective June 30. A lifelong advocate for health equity and student achievement, John has been a prominent figure in the profession locally and nationally for decades.
John has built a distinguished career as a podiatric physician, surgeon and academic leader. He has been a leading voice on advancing diabetic foot care and wound care, as well as podiatric education and residency training. Since 1998, he has served as dean of the School of Podiatric Medicine, overseeing academic programs and clinical operations, including the largest podiatric wound care clinic in the city. Under his leadership, the school has focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for students from all walks of life, and he has positively impacted thousands of podiatrists.
His leadership extends beyond campus, including service as president of the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association (PPMA) and chairman of various committees with the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). He has received numerous awards for his work in healthcare, including the Pennsylvania Podiatrist of the Year from PPMA and the 2023 Diversity Award from the APMA. In 2012, he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which recognizes inspiring Americans whose contributions strengthen our country.
John has also been active in labor advocacy. He established the first podiatric physicians’ union and served as an international vice president of the Office of Professional Employees International Union.
John embodies the Temple Made spirit, having been a student at Temple, and over the years, proudly celebrating his children and grandchildren as graduates.
John is a passionate advocate who has made an indelible impact on Temple, on Philadelphia, and on the profession of podiatry. We are enormously grateful for his service and know he will enjoy having more time to spend with his wonderful family.
During this transition, Lesly D. Robinson will serve as interim dean beginning July 1. Lesly is currently the associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor at the School of Podiatric Medicine. Her knowledge of the school and commitment to the faculty and students will provide great leadership and stability.
Please join us in thanking John for his positive and lasting impact.
Sincerely,
John Fry
President
