Immigration and Customs Enforcement information and guidance

Posted

Dear Students and Colleagues,

Over the last few months, the increased activity of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in cities across the country has caused concern for many students, faculty and staff. These developments can have a significant impact on members of our community and create a sense of anxiety when the safety of our students, colleagues and neighbors feels at risk. In this difficult moment, we stand together as one Temple community. No one is alone in this.

University leadership has been working closely with the Federal Impact Advisory Group, which includes faculty and student representatives, as well as Temple Student Government, on these issues. University representatives have also been in communication with various external partners to better understand and assess the recent activity involving ICE. We are committed to supporting our community and ensuring that individuals have access to the resources and guidance they need. Here is what you should know.

  • At this time, there have been no confirmed reports of ICE activity on our campus or any non-routine law enforcement presence nearby.
  • The university has procedures in place to protect your rights while making sure that we are complying with the law.
  • We are committed to protecting your privacy. The university does not share personally identifiable information with law enforcement without a valid legal basis, such as a court order or judicial warrant.
  • ICE agents can enter public areas of campus. However, they cannot enter private spaces—like classrooms and residence halls—without a judicial warrant.

We also want you to know what to do if you encounter or hear about ICE activity.

  • If you suspect ICE is on or near campus, call the Temple University Police Department (TUPD) at 215-204-1234.
  • If any law enforcement agency other than Temple Police asks for access to nonpublic spaces, call TUPD.
  • If you or someone you know receives a request for access to protected records, a warrant, court order or subpoena, contact the Office of University Counsel at 215-204-6542 and TUPD right away.
  • If you are approached by ICE agents, you have the right to remain silent and do not have to answer questions.

Moments like this make us want to take action and get involved. Peaceful protest and free expression are core values at Temple. At the same time, demonstrations must follow the law and university rules and should not disrupt campus operations or safety.

Please continue to look out for one another and treat each other with respect, even when you have different views. Our shared commitment to public safety and free expression is especially important during these challenging times.

We remain committed to making sure everyone in our community can learn and work in a safe and respectful environment.

Sincerely,

John Fry
