Preparing for this weekend’s storm

Posted

To the Temple Community,

As you are likely aware, a significant winter storm event is expected to hit our region later this weekend. As of now, snow is expected to begin falling around midnight on Saturday, and the storm will persist through Sunday.

The City of Philadelphia has announced that it will be under a snow emergency beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, as the National Weather Service predicts the region could see snow accumulation of 8 to 18 inches.

Ahead of the impending storm, the university is actively preparing for potential travel disruptions, freezing temperatures and service impacts. Public Safety, Facilities and Operations, and essential student support functions will be staffed at normal capacity throughout the storm. All on-campus residence halls have been adequately stocked with food and supplies, and Johnson and Hardwick’s Louis J. Esposito Dining Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Given the uncertainty of the storm’s impact, we encourage all members of our community to plan accordingly. Charge electronic devices, gather warm clothing and blankets, ensure you have any needed prescription medications, and keep ready-to-eat food items and bottled water on hand in case dining hours or local services are affected.

See the list below for information on the operating status of university offices/schools/services this weekend.

  • Howard Gittis Student Center: Closing Saturday at 5 p.m., will remain closed through at least Sunday. This includes food retail locations.
  • Campus Recreation: Closing Saturday at 8 p.m., will remain closed through at least Sunday.
  • Temple Athletics: Women’s basketball vs. Charlotte at the Liacouras Center on Saturday has been moved from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m. Men’s basketball at UTSA on Saturday has been moved from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m. Fencing at Penn State will not compete this weekend due to travel concerns related to the weather.
  • The TECH Center: Will be closed on Sunday.
  • Charles Library: Will be open as normal from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, hours will be noon to 8 p.m., and there are tentative plans to open on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 24/7 study area where Stella’s is located will remain open all weekend, accessible by swipe card on the west side of the building by the Liacouras and Pollett Walk intersection.
  • Parking: The Tyler and Temple Towers lots will close Saturday at 6 p.m. Tyler overnight parkers should move their vehicles to Bell Garage, and Temple Towers overnight parkers should move their vehicles to the Liacouras Garage. All surface lots will be closed on Monday.
  • Flight: Service will end at midnight Saturday night and remain suspended through Sunday. Walking escorts remain available.
  • School of Podiatric Medicine: The Charles E. Krauz Library and Fitness Center will close at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and remain closed Sunday.
  • Temple Harrisburg: All activities will move to remote for Monday and Tuesday.

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine will issue information and directives that may differ from those of the university. Faculty, staff and students should look for follow-up communication from Katz administration and program leadership regarding the status of classes, clinical activities and operations.

The Kornberg School of Dentistry will also issue direction for its clinics and directives that may differ from those of the university. All preclinical labs at the school will be closed on Sunday.

Questions related to the status of weekend events hosted by schools or colleges should be directed to each specific school.

As we look toward the week ahead, we expect to have greater clarity by midday Sunday. At that time, the university will provide an update regarding Monday operations to give the community as much notice as possible.

For those who will be on campus this weekend, please know that your safety and well-being are our top priorities. Temple Police can always be reached directly through the TUSafe app or by calling 215-204-1234.

Stay warm and stay safe.

Sincerely,
